With only 8 days till the river opener, with the water table and flow rates staying above (and the last few days well above) the usual spring flow rates, the fishability of the whole river system should stay in great shape. But the jury is still out on rather that warm (July in March) weather we had hurried things along to much and sent many of the spring spawers (especially the males) back to the Bay early. One good sign that it did not is the way the post spawn bite has developed pretty much on schedule this year along the bay shore lines, even with that warm spell. Also good that the Saginaw River water temps went back to their norm after that heat wave. It should be a decent first day IMO. thumleft

This is shaping up to be a tremendous opener. If the latest weather channel forecast holds the whole weekend ought to be very good.

Me and the granddaughter took a spin over to the old Mapleton bridge on the Titt a week ago this past Monday and tossed a couple lines in with a crawler on it just to try and catch something. Got her a little tackle box for Easter so I wanted to take her fishing for a little bit. Its only 5 miles or so from home. We caught 1 - 17'' walleye in about an hour & half.
There was a guy I knew and his 3 boys there. They had caught a couple eyes before I got there & had 3 redhorse suckers. They said the day before they caught quite a few walleyes drfting a crawler.
Not sure if drifting is legal right right now. There was a few fish in there then. A couple 2-3 wks might make a differance though. I probly won't bother fighting the crowd on the Titt. Don't have a boat for that. I mostly shore fish that.

I'm with you on the crowd fighting Kimbo. Gave up on that scene years ago. And you will always have both spots and days where you catch more or fewer walleyes in the river, especially during the spring when the walleyes start to fall back out of the system. Pods of them seems to gather and fall back together during this period. So some days and some sections of river can get hotter then others during this time of year.

Anyone on here start before daybreak? I'm talking midnight to daylight, to avoid the crowd's? Me and wife are wanting to go, but my son has a baseball game at 10 and my daughter has a soccer game at the same time. So, we were thinking about staying up, and fishing in the dark, in the wee hours of the morning.

Taking minnows, crawlers, and some crankbait's. Gonna fill the tank up, charge the battery, check the batteries for the lights, and the list goes on and on......

Im so excited, get to fish the opener, from a boat, for the fisrt time in many years. I think the last time that I fished the walleye opener was when I was about 15yrs old, that was with my dad in a boat that he borrowed from a buddy of his. WOOHOOO. Gonna feel like I am fishing up at Tippy Dam....lol, maybe not that bad though...lol

Oh yeah....and you'll catch better fish. I'm launching at 10:30 Friday night from Imerman and myself and our crew is camping on the river for at least the first night/day. Sending you a pm with specifics.

I could always find a spot with some solitude to fish on the river, given I had the Jet Boat. It's the launching and retrieving at the ramps that became a nightmare and a fist fight waiting to happen for me. Mad

Hey guy's due to the economic down turn, I will not be putting the boat in the river on the opener. I am thinking about a good old fashioned bank fishing day. Is it worth it and where can I go around the Immerman park area. I know that Immerman has a fishing area but I don't really want to deal with the crowds. Can anyone help point me to a area that has fewer people or at least a place where you can spread out. Also, I was wondering if it is legal to fish with a perch rig style rig for walleye? Bell sinker, and tight line with a dropper and a minnow. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in Advance Hank

Hank,

I used to shore fish at the end of Salzburg that was a few yrs back. It's not a bad place to go just get there early and claim your piece of the bank. The bank is pretty steep too. I think the two yrs I fished there the water was down and you could move around pretty good. Always caught my fair share there too. I can't say that it is like that now but it may be worth a try. Parking on the side of the road I believe is still permitted. I have really been debating on heading north for the opener or stay and fight the crowds......

After the season opens anything that's legal to fish with any time and place is also legal to use on the Tittabawassee. Those specail rules only apply before the opener.
